The Republic of the Marshall Islands made its first Olympic appearance in Beijing on Friday evening, August 8, 2008. During the parade of countries, RMI olympic committee official Waylon Muller was the honorary flag bearer, accompanied by runner Haley Nemra. Both were dressed in colorful costumes representing the Marshallese tradition and culture. They were followed by the four other RMI athletes -- Jason Anju, Roman Cress, Jared Heine, and Julianne Kirchner -- and RMINOC officials. Heine will compete in the 100-meter backstroke on Sunday evening, August 10. On Friday morning, August 15, Cress will run the men's 100-meter, and Nemra the women's 800-meter. Kirchner will swim in the women's 50-meter freestyle Friday evening. Jason will compete Saturday morning, August 23, in Taekwondo's men's 80kg Class.
